Summer Fire Safety
Summer is always full of family, food, and fun adventures, but we cannot allow the leisurely atmosphere of the summertime to let us become careless about fire safety. Grill fires on residential properties result in an estimated 10 deaths, 100 injuries, and $37 million in property loss each year. Whether you’re grilling in the backyard or roasting marshmallows over a fire pit, be sure to always implement these fire prevention tips:
- Keep fire pits, fire places, torches, and other open flames at least 10 feet away from your house, fence, or anything else that could burn.
- Keep the 3 feet around the grill clear of children, pets, and other possible obstacles at all times.
- Keep a bucket of water – or better yet, a fire extinguisher – within reach.
- Propane and charcoal grills should be used outdoors only.
- Keep your grill clean by removing grease buildup.
- Clear the area around your grill or fire pit of overhanging branches, nearby railings, miscellaneous debris, etc. to decrease the risk of stray embers igniting a fire.
- Be sure that your gas grill’s lid is open before lighting it.
- Place the coals from your grill in a metal can with a lid, once they have cooled. Never put coals into a wooden, plastic, or paper container.
- Do not use consumer fireworks – leave it to the professionals.
