Why Crawling Low Under Smoke Matters

When a fire breaks out, smoke rises, filling a room from the top of the room down.  Thick, hot smoke that carries deadly gases and makes it hard to see or breathe can settle close to the floor.  In between these two layers of smoke is what is referred to as a “safety zone” of breathable air.  This “safety zone” is about 1 to 2 feet above the floor and the air here is clearer, cooler, and safer to breathe.  By crawling and staying low, you can avoid inhaling toxic gases and superheated air, increasing your chances of a safe escape.   

The National Fire Protection Association sponsors a national fire safety program called EDITH (Exit Drills in the Home) to help educate households on how to safely escape a burning building.  EDITH emphasizes the importance of staying low in a smoke-filled environment.  To teach this vital safety protocol, Boulder Blimp’s Inflatable Fire Education Houses now feature a dedicated smoke crawl space.
